LÉGER

 Teriade, Paris, 1950
Cirque is regarded as a major Modern Illustrated Book. Published in an edition of 280 copies, it contains full-page lithographs in strong, vivid colors, measuring 12 x 16 inches and is signed by the artist, who also designed the cover. Among other books, special mention must be made of La Fin du Monde by Blaise Cendrars, published in Paris in 1919. It contains pochoir illustrations after designs by Léger, foretelling the style the artist would later employ. The typographic design of some pages, in particular the cover, makes this a revolutionary book for its time. There can be no doubt that the typographic style and composition of La Fin du Monde exerted considerable influence on future architectural and advertising design.
